A Sprout pencil as the name suggests employ a simple principle that utilize pencil as a seed holder. Instead of an eraser, each pencil has a seed capsule on one end. The capsule contains one of several varieties of plants from herbs like basil and rosemary to flower and vegetables like green pepper.

Once you have used the entire pencil, you just have to stick the capsule end in some soils and water it down. The seed should germinate within 1 to 3 weeks into a healthy plant.

The concept of such plantable pencil was developed in 2012 by three students at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology. Sprout purchased the idea two years later.

The sustainable pencil has turned into a major hit with ompany sales hitting $2 million last year and expected to double by the end of this year. Many major companies like Disney and Ikea also bought Sprout pencils as a gift-bag novelty.

We as individuals know we cannot save the planet, but we can do things little by little, we can take small steps in our everyday life, Michael Stausholm, Sprouts chief executive, explained.

Thats what people have in mind when they buy a Sprout pencil you can feel you can make a difference by buying something you dont have to throw out afterward, but plant it instead to give it a new life, Stausholm added.

Not only does Sprout Worlds offer eco-friendly pencil amongst their products, but they also have another sustainable writing implements and business cards. Its cards for example, are made from recycled papers and contain various flower seeds. This is a great idea considering many greeting cards are left disposed in the rubbish bin upon receiving it.

There are roughly 15 billion wooden pencil produced worldwide each year that used about 60,000 trees. While the concept doesnt actually address deforestation problem as a whole, Sprouts pencil is an honorable small gesture that we can all employ towards a greener earth.
