Mount Rushmore in South Dakota is one of the most iconic landmarks in the United States. Carved into the side of the mountain, the glorious figures of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are visited by thousands of people from around the world over the years. Its truly an amazing sight to behold, but this monument is actually hiding a little secret.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum had planned to create a much larger image that included several important moments in Americas history as well as the images of four presidents. But his idea was considered too intricate to be realized and so he had to settle for the four presidents.
But then he came up with the idea of the Hall of Records, a hidden room that would tell the story of the US to future generations, including the country's charter documents.

He was lucky. The US government approved but asked the sculptor to focus on finishing the presidents' heads before starting work on the Hall of Records.
According to Daily Mail, the room is sealed with a 1,200-pound granite slab for protection. Sadly, it wasn't completed until decades after he died. The construction began in 1920s but was only in the 1990s when the project was revived and the the Hall of Records was completed.

Inside the room is a teakwood box that was locked in a titanium vault, holding the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, Borglum's biography, and short descriptions of each president featured on the monument.
Unfortunately, tourists cant look closer to the Hall Of Records though because its location is too difficult to reach.
