The folks at Cheap Air, an online travel agency seem to have found the formula for travelers to book the cheapest flight ticket for their trip. Over the last year, they have analyzed about three million airline trips in the quest to discover trends in the flight tickets prices. They tracked ticket price fluctuations from 320 days before takeoff all the way up until the days before. The result is quite surprising.
Avid travellers seem to think that the cheapest day to book ticket is at the last minute. Shockingly, this fact according to this recent study is one hundred percent false. The researchers found that, on average, last-minute ticket cost about $200 more when booked within 7 days of departure. While tickets bought within 7 to 13 days before departure cost about $75 more.

So, when is exactly the perfect day to buy the flight ticket?
The answer is 54 days before takeoff. Cheap Air found that on average fifty-four days before the d-day is when domestic airline tickets are at their absolute lowest price. And if you miss the 54 days you could also book your ticket at the prime booking window which last from 21-112 days before departure for the lowest possible prices. On these dates, ticket prices are typically hovering near the lowest price theyll ever reach.
If youre a bargain hunter like most of us, your sweet spot is the Prime Booking Window, about three weeks to three and a half months in advance, the study says.
Although this formula is generated through research, the result is of course still needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
The research also pointed out that this isnt a fixed-rules. Your flights best price window will depends a lot on the specific destination that you are taking. For a popular holiday destinations with lots of booking demands, the formula may not be applicable as the airlines wont have any incentive to make the price lower. Likewise for the flights to hard-to-reach airports in small cities. Theres little airline competition there, so ticket prices dont drop nearly as much over their lifespan.
Nevertheless, there is no harm to try on this formula to get your bargain holiday.
