Professor Jeremy Spencer, one of the academics who carried out the experiment involving rats at Reading University, said: "The results were dramatic. This research is exciting because it illustrates for the first time that moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning such as memory.

The compound is also found in black grapes used to make pinot noir and pinot menuir.

The tests will now start on pensioners, but a spokesperson for the Alzheimers Society states that more research is needed before it can be truly proven to air in the prevention of Alzheimers. No word yet on where we can sign up.

This isnt the first study that has shown there to be more benefits to a glass of red wine than just he sweet taste. Other research has claimed that two glasses of champagne could improve circulation and heart health, and possibly reduce the risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease. Another study revealed that drinking a glass of wine can equate to an hour of exercise. Resveratrol is the chemical found in certain fruits and nuts and according to Jason Dyck, the principal investigator for the study, believes that the chemical could enhance exercise training and performance. Unfortunately for those of us who enjoy a glass of white wine, the chemical is only found in red grapes. I guess nothing in life can be truly perfect, but these studies come pretty close.
