Brilio.net/en - In a blow to poor University students around the globe, the secret to a perfect glass of wine has been revealed, and its most likely something they cant afford. According to James Molesworth, Senior Editor at Wine Spectator, the secret to a perfect glass of wine lies in the stemware.

According to Riedel, a stemware company found in 1958, the shape of the glass can drastically alter the taste of the wine. As Georg Riedel, the 10th generation owner of the family business, explains: "The glass is a tool made to deal with the multiple flavor contributors in wine -- like fruit, neutrality and acidity -- and balance them."

There are three main components of the design the size, the shape and the opening. The size will control how much air comes in contact with the wine while the shape determines how much liquid flows to the opening. The opening itself controls how the wine flows and eventually lands on the palate. Even an average drinker would be able to taste the difference. "We belong to the category of mammals and have a brain. We're naturally drawn to sucrose. The sweeter something is, the more we like it," Riedel says. Therefore, glassware that brings out the sweet aromas and the fruiter flavors in wine would be preferable.

Scientists at the Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering at Tokyo Medical and Dental University recently took the claims made by Riedel and discovered some interesting facts. Using an imaging device called a sniff-cam, Professor Kohji Mitsubayashi and his team mapped out the distribution of ethanol vaporizing from differently-shaped glasses, including: a standard wine glass, a straight glass, and a cocktail glass. The same amount of wine was poured into each of the glasses and examined at 13 degrees Celcius. Using the sniff cam, the interference is captured. The images revealed a ring-shaped vapor on the edge of the wine glasses, which allows drinkers to appreciate the wine without the smell of ethanol interfering.

The report concluded that: "The shape of the wine glass has a very sophisticated and functional design for tasting and enjoying the aroma of the wine.

For those of us who cant afford the wine glasses, which cost upwards of $100 USD, the average glass will have to do.
