The eclipse starts when the shadow of the moon overlaps Earths surface in the Indian Ocean at West Sumatera. Then the shadow moves across Indonesia into Pacific Ocean. Indonesia is the only land crossed by the eclipse. Here are some places to see the total eclipse at its best:
1. Belitung, Bangka-Belitung Islands
This exotic island in Sumatera has world class white sandy beaches adorned with beautiful rock formations, turquoise mirror-like seas, and healthy coral directly off the beach. It is also the most captivating place to observe the 2016 solar eclipse with maximum duration of appearance about 2 minutes and 12 seconds.
2. Ternate and Tidore, Maluku

Ternate (formerly Celebes) and Tidore are two remote islands in Maluku Islands. Also with pristine beaches and spectacularly rich coral reefs, these two are great places to spot the total solar eclipse.
From Ternate, the maximum duration of totality appearance is 2 minutes and 44 seconds. But for more adventurous journey, ride a speedboat to reach Tidores southern part with eclipse duration over three minutes.
3. Palu, Central Sulawesi
A great place for the eclipse sighting in Sulawesi is in a valley, south of the town of Palu. The hills at the east of the valley built a perfect wind-barrier, reducing cloudiness potential at the place. At this place, the maximum eclipse duration will be 2 minutes and 50 seconds. A great one.
4. Moti Island, Halmahera
Moti (or Motir) is a tiny volcanic island in the western side of Halmahera Island. It is only 5 kilometers wide, and surrounded by rich and colorful coral reefs. Its untouched marine life became one of divers favorite spots in Indonesia, as its a great spot to see the total solar eclipse. The longest maximun duration of the eclipse occurs here, with 3 minutes and 15 seconds duration.
5. Palembang, South Sumatera
Palembang is a great place to witness this rare and interesting natural phenomenon. You can see the solar eclipse in Kuto Besak Fortress area, one of historical places in Palembang. Overseeing the Ampera Bridge and Musi River, you could enjoy great sunset panorama from the fortress area. The bridge will also will become the culinary hub for viewers of the total solar eclipse.
